Sorry, Donny.

Bugs Bunny and pals get a facelift

Warner Bros. offering "re-imagined" versions of classic cartoon characters

Talk about extreme makeovers. Take a look at what's happening to Daffy and Bugs.

Hoping to breathe new life into its animated Looney Tunes franchise and prop up the WB television network's slumping Kids' WB line-up, Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros. is planning to launch a new cartoon series this fall based on "re-imagined" versions of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tasmanian Devil, Lola Bunny, Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote.

Warner Bros. has created angular, slightly menacing-looking versions of the classic Looney Tunes characters for its new series, dubbed "Loonatics" and set in the year 2772.

Names for the new characters haven't been finalized, but they are likely to be derived from the originals: Buzz Bunny, for example.

Each new character retains personality quirks of the original. The new Bugs, for example, will be the natural leader of the Loonatics' spaceship; the new Daffy will remain confident that he is the one who should be in charge.

Warner Bros. isn't sending the venerable original Looney Tunes cast into retirement. But it is trying to update the characters' appeal among modern kids.

The classic characters were wisecrackers who rode their irreverent humor to stardom in the 1940s. The challenge now for Warner Bros. is to find a fresh way to tap the funny bone of an audience raised on Bart Simpson and SpongeBob SquarePants.

"The new series will have the same classic wit and wisdom, but we have to do it more in line with what kids are talking about today," says Sander Schwartz, president of Warner Bros. Animation.

The plots are action-oriented, filled with chases and fights. Each character possesses a special crime-fighting power.

Sounds familiar? The format echoes a successful show Warner Bros. launched in 2003 on its WB network and Cartoon Network called "Teen Titans," about five teenage superheroes.

The series, featuring dark, futuristic characters, based on such DC Comics personalities as Robin the Boy Wonder, quickly became a hit. It ranked No. 26 among kids programs for the fourth quarter last year.

With "Loonatics," Warner Bros. thinks it may have TV's next blockbuster cartoon on its hands. "The reaction by kids in test groups has been phenomenal," says Schwartz.

Given Warner's mixed track record over the past two decades with the Looney Tunes franchise, advertisers may be wary.

Steven Spielberg sparked things up in the early 1990s with "Tiny Toons," a series in which new characters interacted with the originals. But a 2002 effort, "Baby Looney Tunes," has been a dud for the Cartoon Network, where it ended the fourth quarter ranked No. 104 among kids programs.

Efforts to juice up Looney Tunes on the big screen haven't fared much better. "Space Jam," starring Michael Jordan, turned a profit back in 1996. But "Looney Tunes: Back in Action" bombed last year: The movie, which cost $80 million to make, grossed just $21 million in the U.S., according to box-office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations. (It grossed an additional $48 million outside the U.S., Warner Bros. says.)

It's a risky time to launch an expensive Saturday-morning cartoon. Kraft Foods Inc., which spent about $90 million on children's advertising in 2004, said in January it would stop advertising junk food to kids under 12. The company's decision, coming as the food industry generally is shifting kids advertising dollars to the Internet and video games, is expected to result in softer ad sales. The kids "upfront" market, when $700 million to $800 million in national kids-TV advertising is sold to deep-pocketed marketers, kicks off today.

"It doesn't take a genius to look at the trouble in the toy business and what's going on in the food business to see that the overall kids market is particularly weak," says Jon Mandel, co-chief executive of Grey Global Group Inc.'s MediaCom.

It's not as if the Kids' WB has much of a choice about whether to be so aggressive. At a time when the behemoths of kids TV - cable TV's Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and the Disney Channel - are gaining or stable, ratings on broadcast TV's Kids' WB have plunged.

So far this season, the network's Saturday-morning viewership is down 26 percent compared with a year ago among children from two to 11 years old, says Nielsen Media Research.

Lisa Quan, an analyst for ad-buying firm Magna Global, a unit of Interpublic Group of Cos., says the network's average audience has shrunk about 40 percent compared with its peak two years ago, when cartoons such as "Pokemon" and "Yu-Gi-Oh" were white hot. "The WB has had a long, hard tumble from grace," Quan says.

David Janollari, president of entertainment for the WB, says he has no illusions about how much work the kids division has ahead of it. "We simply need a new crop of big hits," he says. "This audience is finicky and quickly gets itchy for something new." At the same time, however, the WB notes that it remains a strong No. 1 on Saturday morning among Saturday morning broadcasters - Walt Disney Co.'s ABC is in second place - and that ratings have improved recently.

Warner Bros. has been criticized for standing still during the late '80s and early '90s at a time when Disney was reaping huge profits from its cast of animated characters. But Warner has shown in recent years that it can launch new cartoons that rain profits: Warner released three "Pokemon" movies following the WB's successful 1999 launch of the cartoon series, along with an avalanche of toys and other licensed products.

"Loonatics" is part of a wider effort by Warner Bros. to boost classic franchises: A new Batman movie and a remake of "Superman" also are in the works. The potential revenue is massive: If "Loonatics" is a hit on Saturday morning, for example, it is likely to ripple through the company's merchandising, home-video and movie divisions.

"That's the ultimate goal of all kids programming," says Janollari. "If we score, it's a gold mine."

I was going to say "fuuuuck no" and that it's bound for failure, but then I remember how well some of Marvel Comics reworking of it's characters have paid off (X-men Unlimited, et al)

Hit these three marks and you've got yourself a new fan:

1. iHave it be presented as sort of a slightly demented alternate-universe version of our favorite characters.

2. DON'T have it be lame X-Treme kiddy fair (that went out in the late 90's, folks)

3. Make the new Lola Bunny hot.

On the other hand, they won't replace the originals. It's just a new series that might work and be succesful in it's own right, but can't be the originals, especialy since so many of the Looney Toons fans are adults of all ages (and no, I don't mean furries).

Uh huh... I'm sensing a pattern here: Loony Toons (timeless classic, loved today), Tiny Toons (new "modern" characters based on existing Loony Toons, entertaining at times but generally poor), Animaniacs (original show with original characters, entertaining to this day), Baby Loony Toons (new "modern" characters based on existing Loony Toons, sucked beyond all that could possibly suck), Freakazoid (original show with original characters, entertaining to this day), Loonatics (new "modern" characters based on existing Loony Toons, can't comment as I haven't seen it).

I can't help but wonder what is going on in the heads of the heads of WB.

This audience is finicky and quickly gets itchy for something new.

What's this? Something new?!! Rehashing characters old enough to be someone's grandparent is not new! Trying to take a character that was originally meant to be funny and make him edgy and modern is not new! Do these people not see that what the world needs is more original content and something that can technically be considered 100% new? I don't know about you guys but if I want to see edgy funny animals I might as well read Jack.

"The new series will have the same classic wit and wisdom, but we have to do it more in line with what kids are talking about today," says Sander Schwartz, president of Warner Bros. Animation.

The problem is, WB toons haven't had the Looney Tunes "classic wit and wisdom" since they stopped really making them and just recycled stuff into the Bugs and Daffy Show and a few holiday collages. The latter part of Chuck Jones' time with the Looney Tunes marks about when it started losing the qualities that make the classic ones so timeless.

Tiny Tunes fared decently, IMO, because it was a divergence from WB's typical stuff and brought toons more into the area where they are now with a healthy dose of irreverence and sarcasm. TTA also drew on the Looney Tunes penchant for poking fun at what was popular at the time they were made (Garbo's enormous feet, Durante's nose and "ha-chachachachachacha," and such). TTA drew mostly on what had made such large headlines that only people living in a cave on the moon wouldn't know about it. TTA was good when it used these references sparingly, and relied on its own formula. But it stunk horribly when it tried to recapture the feel of the classic toons.

Since then, WB has relied excessively on pop-culture references for its humor and hasn't really successfully used its characteristic zaniness to full effect. There's only so many Clinton references and completely manic behavior you can put into a cartoon before it gets old. WB's recent offerings have attempted to be punchline after punchline, rather than going with the setup-straightline-punchline formula. Zaniness in contrast to non-zaniness stands out... zaniness for its own sake, which is WB's trademark now, just becomes bland and even moronic.

I think that's going to be the pitfall of American Dad, too. Family Guy set totally off-the-wall things amidst a fairly normal backdrop. But American Dad just seems to be too consistently over-the-top to really build up the gags. A baby genius and a well-read, booze-swilling dog are pretty odd, but somehow not enough to not blend in with the fairly normal backdrop for Peter's '70s and '80s TV-fueled hijinks. But, a fish that sounds like a German top, an alien that sounds like Paul Lynde, a hyperparanoid father with the CIA and a bra-burning daughter are so consistently abnormal that there's nothing to really anchor it.

The plots are action-oriented, filled with chases and fights. Each character possesses a special crime-fighting power.

Which, of course, translates to a marketable action feature for each figure sitting on a Target shelf in a blister pack.

"It doesn't take a genius to look at the trouble in the toy business and what's going on in the food business to see that the overall kids market is particularly weak," says Jon Mandel, co-chief executive of Grey Global Group Inc.'s MediaCom.

Maybe cuz kids' toys suck right now. They're either rehashes of toys that were popular about 20 years ago or repackaged imports of Japanese sentai show characters. The facelift the Transformers have gotten is impressive, but the figures have even less playability than before. Toy designers have gone on this rampant wave of designing toys to prey on the nostalgia of adult collectors. While they look nice, most toys won't last 20 seconds under normal play conditions. And the Star Wars line has really sucked. Sure, it's nice for adult collectors to see figures of characters that were on screen for all of two seconds..... but kids aren't really going to have much interest in reinacting Senator Palpatine's acceptance speech. All of these old farts in flowing robes aren't really going to sell with kids. Oooh.. it's Senator Hubbabubba with the Intergalactic Bankers Guild... WITH SPRING-LOADED EMBARGO ACTION!

On the other side of the coin are the collector figures that are basically mini-statues. Sure, that Spawn figure looks impressive, but about all you can do is turn his head.... the only playability he'll really have is seeing how far he can be launched by that water-balloon launcher you made with grandma's bra.

And if a figure is halfway decent, it's bought up by collectors before a kid can even collect his Saturday allowance and be driven to Toys R Us. Kids is just screwed when it comes to toys these days. Small wonder they're not selling well.

"That's the ultimate goal of all kids programming," says Janollari. "If we score, it's a gold mine."

Action Bugs!

Thsi is sad.. but perhaps necessary! ($)
Classics are classics.. and you can'y be edgy and funny with the old characters anymore ..
Mostly because you can't do any funny physical comedy on TV.. with shotguns or frying pans!

Also hurting anyone's feelings is a no no... so....

Most you can do is talk big and shoot and miss with laserguns and throw vicecracks at some space mutant of
no determinable earthly racial features!

Censors of the future have helluvalotta dangerous imitable acts to cut,
when everyone owns laser rifles.... =(

I just hafta think of this in a way that Bugs and co. needs work badly and doesn't mind being painted
green and doing this.

Tho...they should do porno instead stooping this low! =D

Slappy, please come blow up the sets in some ep!

I'm guessing they're trying to cash in on the popularity of a greeting-card series that came up over the past couple of years featuring dogs and cats with Photoshopped heads and huuuuuuge eyes.

So, Mitch, how's that ignore mod thing coming?

Like I said, the leak detection systems have been reading higher levels of furryness in the building lately.

Mostly because you can't do any funny physical comedy on TV.. with shotguns or frying pans!

Most you can do is talk big and shoot and miss with laserguns and throw vicecracks at some space mutant of

Yes... racial caricatures, frying pans to the head, dynamite gags, and oversized six-shooters (or ten-shooters versus pea-shooters) are BAD...... but ninja kicks, martial arts weaponry, laser pistols, and a generally rude attitude to everybody are a GOLDMINE.

You can't hit a person with a frying pan, but you can bash them with a bo.
You can't point a revolver at someone, but you can point a laser gun at them.
You can't blow the feathers off of a chicken with a firecracker, but you can blow up a bridge.
You can't use a cymbal or a bird bath as a coolie hat, but you can tell anyone of caucasian or alien origin to eat your shell, your shorts, your ninja foot, your laser blasts, or just berate them in general.

There's an image with the cast now.

You can see Wile E. Coyote (Super Genius), Taz, Bugs, Daffy, Lola and the Road Runner in this shot. Sorry, Skunkfuckers. Lola's not that hot.

They all have a black and one color design (complete with triangle on chest). For the love of God, they look like a pack of frickin' highlighters. Well looks can be deciving (remember Teen Titans?). I have no idea what the show will be like. It could be thoroughly entertaining. Who knows for sure.

I saw a news segment about this on MSNBC with the head suit from WB Animation (surprised the retard didn't use the words "edgy and in your face"). The female character is named Lexi Bunny, and these characters are supposed to be descendents of the original LT bunch.

IMO, regardless of the hype coming out of WB, this is going to as much of a fiasco as their other attempts at "re-imagining", such as making them as little babies and as gangstas.

Cheeeerist. They look like David Hopkins (creator of Jack) tried to draw them.. especially with the Road Runner's sickle hands and.... Lexi's.... little frayed rat's nest of a ponytail.

And with all of those triangles on their chest, you know what people are going to be griping about. Pushin' the homosexual agenda - TO THE EXTREME!

Interesting slideshow. ;)

This is part of the problem when you design characters to be action figures first, and characters second.

Whatever happened to, y'know... toys that weren't hyped by 30-minute animated ads, or cartoons that never had toys made from them. You know how much I wanted then to make Mighty Orbots and Galaxy Rangers toys when I was a kid??

Yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, YOOOOO!

Sander Schwartz and his crew
Get prepared to be dissed
Cuz the Go-Man's in the hizz-ouse
And he be thouroughly pissed!

You think this "Loonatics" crap's a good idea
What kinda stash you been baggin'?
You pass a "Lobo" toon and green light this
You should be sentenced to FRAGGIN'!

Why don't ya take a dump on Chuck Jones' grave
And get the whole thing over wit'?
Cuz you may think this'll bull up your market
But the Chain Gang sees it's just plain bull-

It's all just a sick corporate plan
To fatten up your bank roll
Well I say you can take them pointy action figures
And shove 'em straight up your corn-hole!

And that's my message for the suits
All up in the WB
Those diamond-studded glasses of your's ain't workin', boy
How do I know?

Cuz YOU CAN'T SEE ME!

And the roadrunner? Why, dear God, of all the original characters, would they include the decendent of something that doesn't do anything but go "beep?"

speaking of...

You know I've caught a few episodes of Teen Titans and while I normally don't like superhero types... the show actually is enjoyable EXCEPT for the Japanese/Anime influence throughout the whole thing. In fact the episode thats on right now is particularly bad with it. Its really out of place and illogical. To me, it really sticks out bad... Im sure they only did it cuz that style happens to hip with the kids or something nowadays.

Whatever it is, I find it incredibly obnoxious :(

Pretty much. It's like if Bruce Timm got it on with Rumiko Takahashi and they had a kid and the kid went and worked for WB. It's actually a halfway decent show. I don't go out of my way to watch it, but it's a decent enough fallback if there's nothing else on and I'm doing weights around that time (I prefer not to really watch anything particular when I do weights and don't have anything on when I'm doing cardio). The stories are amusing, though.

The thing about the style is.. fortunately it doesn't try to directly mimic anime. It basically just uses a lot of anime conventions, like the Gainax white-out shock eyes, sweatdrops, and bulging stress veins. Unfortunately, these are so forced into it that it's the animated equivalent of listening to some otaku hambeast say things like, "I really like Puffy AmiYumi. They're sugoi, ne?"

That pretty much exactly it.

I can't really drop names all over the place like a lot of people can, but if you look cartoons look a certain way usually going by decades. And I must say, a majority the current late 90's-present stuff looks like complete shit. Probably mostly because its recycled endlessly. I dislike the style, whatever you'd call it. just the anime influence..>

http://www.asifa-hollywood.org/LoonaticsPreview.mov holy god this is taking it's good sweet time to download.

Okay I just watched it and it's WORSE than you'd think. My first thought when I saw the character designs was that it didn't look like a comedy at all. IT'S NOT. It's a stupid SUPERHERO cartoon. The voices make me weep. The example plot is awful. This is a superhero cartoon doomed to fail so they tossed in terrible mutations of classic characters who should not be changed for any reason ever and then vomit on the result a few times and accidently spill black ink on the drawings.

Why must this exist? :(

Do they have this one pet animator that they use for promotion?

Oh, what contrast does that opening have to the rest of the vomit... First they show how toons should be made ..
.with luhv and care... and then... BLÖRF!

Ordinary Toon Ink's never caused such mutations so far.. =)

I was considering on starting opening bets as to when anyone draws porn of these things... =>

Im leaning more towards later rather than sooner... not cuz furries wouldn't do something like that ... rather just because of overall ineptitude and sluggishness =>

To be honest, I'm surprised it hasn't already appeared over at Guppy's oeka...whatever board, considering thay've already defiled Winnie the Pooh, Jazz Jackrabbit, THIS, and countless other cartoon characters no sane human, or even furry, would consider to be even remotely porn-worthy.

I take back what I said in a previous post about the possibility of this show being entertaining. An edgy superhero show? This is more doomed to failure than a Jar Jar Binks show. No wait... a Jar Jar Binks show would actually do better than this Batman Beyond wannabe crap.

BTW, I really enjoyed Batman Beyond, but having a darker futuristic motif worked for Batman because it already had dark detective themes from the begining. At least Tiny Toons had meritable and enjoyable moments. This is just an abomination. I'm glad Chuck Jones is not alive to see this.

PS. Notice the complete lack of actual character animation (except for when Buzz speaks).

Shon Howell (who whined earlier about his leaving) is already sponging off of the controversy by doing his own fan art (see link in the other thread for examples).

In the case of furry, there's always an overabundance of mass, so..

Energy = Mass * Porn... squared? Or is it Massive Porn = Energy? Damn physics is hard.

Fuck Fuck FUCK FUCKITY FUCK.

Before you mentioned that, and after seeing the superhero bent of the series -Buzz has "laser eyes" a la Cyclops of The X-Men (X-Treme X-Men was an actual comic.... HA!), the new blue Roadrunner reminds me of Quicksilver, etc.- I was wondering when Shonty (my pet name for the little squeeker) would take notice of this franchise, given his Extinctioners comic is basicaly a rip off of Marvels X-titles. Jesus, the boy's quick into predictable action.

In all fairness, rather than actual porn, that could be a comment on how Loonatics fucks over the original Looney Tunes. Oh who am I kidding? It's from a furry oekaki. It's porn.

Um, it's Shon Howell that Hirtes was talking about, not Shawntae Howard.

Shhhhhhhhhhhh! He'll hear you. Then he'll jump in his EX-Jet and whiz on over here to defend it... and then we'll have to, y'know.... endure him and stuff.

Just bear in mind his own take on it- that it's hard to do anything original with a superhero comic since it's all pretty run of the mill. Just ignore the obvious similarities between almost all of his characters' designs and X-Men characters, or the general similarities between the concepts and those in X-Men, or that much of it seems akin to the Geonosis storyline in X-Men, or that it bears striking resemblance specifically to X-Men.. despite it apparently being difficult to not do something that seems like a copy of any superhero comic.. and not to, say, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, Superman, Batman, Alpha Flight, Ghost Rider, Moon Knight, Cloak & Dagger, Justice, Starbrand, DP7, Judge Dredd, Marshal Law, Outlanders, Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell, Ranma 1/2, Justice League, Teen Titans, The Flash, Aquaman, Hellboy, Fantastic Four, Steve Canyon, The Punisher, Daredevil, Micronauts, Buck Rogers, Green Lantern, Hawkman, Catwoman, Spider-Woman, The Hulk, She Hulk, Avengers, West Coast Avengers, Firestorm, Doc Savage, Conan, Iron-Man, Silver Surfer, The Ghost, The Shadow, or fuzzy freaking Captain America.

Appleseed and GitS are not about a superheroes, just a well trained soldiers (in the world of cyborgs). No superpowers there. Conan's also just a big magic-fearing guy with a sword. And Punisher is a crazy Nam veteran with a lots and lots of guns (hey, he's like... almost 60 now?).

Outlanders (and Drakuun, too) is one of a few "furry" comics I really like. But the furries are more interested in their own characters/imaginary personalities, I guess.

ARR ROOK THE SAME.

In my opinion, they're too many super powered super heros on TV. I think that's why I used to Batman: The Animated Series so much. Hell, if I saw it on I'd still be tempted to watch it. No guys flying around shooting lazers from their eyes. Just some guy in a costume beating the crap out of bad guys. Proving you don't have to be able to see through walls or fly to save someone.

Well, the WB developers were likely stoned at the time, too. Wanting to update their classic characters to enjoy the success of Teen Titans, they probably put Looney Tunes on one big screen, and Teen Titans on another, then smoked copious amounts of mind-altering substances until the two just kind of melded in a psychadelic haze of groovy colors and animated ass-whuppings.

Jason Yungbluth commented in his blog <2/24/05 entry> about the new Loonatics

<....> "Instead of trying to turn Bugs Bunny and pals--characters that already resonate with every age group--into some sort of neo-Soviet kids show that you might have seen people watching in RoboCop, take your new Hell Bugs, paint him gray and stick him in a rabbit hole. Then find a couple of writer's whose influences aren't exclusively American McGee and Aidan Hughes and create a few brand new animated shorts that start with "What's up, doc?", end with "Ain't I a stinker?", and include, somewhere in the middle, a histrionic opera singer.

Call me loony, but I bet that would really go over big."

Unfortunately, the reason they won't resurrect Looney Tunes these days is that they can't.

I don't mean they don't have the writers or artists who could handle it.. I mean they're not allowed. Even if they put Zombie Freleng, Ghost McKimson, Undead Mel Blanc, and Necrochuck Jones on staff and tried to bring back the glory days of Bugs and crew, they would be so watered down and filled with cereal and toy ads after the censors and corporates got done with them that they would be equally as unwatchable as this recent train wreck is likely to be.

True. I don't know if I've already bitched about it or not (probably have and just forgot, but I'm too pressed for time to check), but I hate the fact that the Tom & Jerry DVD collection not only has the voice of Mammy Two-Shoes redubbed to sound less 'black', but has scenes cut out (lick the one where Tom runs headfirst into a glass doored china cabinet).

I understand it's their prerogative to put out something merketable, and that their intended target audience is kids, but they should have at least made an uncut version available to adults.

The avatar is Sue from the best PC platformer ever Cave Story

The sig is from an irc conversation where some random guy came was in the channel and because we can't stop talking about furries there asked us what yiff was. FSFunky (or whatever he is in the sig) was like "you don't want to know". Then the guy randomly was like "YIP!" and funky was like "what's yip?" and this mysterious guy was like "a sound i make when i'm horny" and funky was like "Maybe you do want to know what yiff is!" and then he said the brilliant line.

I like, like using like.

Saying that Loonatics looks like something kids might be watching on TV in Robocop is an insult to Robocop.

You know, I'd like to make a witty remark about something from Robocop 3...but I couldn't get through the first 15 minutes of it. Once the cute kids haxx0rd the ED 209 I gave up.

Dude, welcome to FOUR YEARS AGO. You are so totally not extreme.

When the fuck did this X-TREEEEEEEM bullshit become popular anyway? Did I miss a fucking meeting? What the hell was wrong with plain ol' "cool"?

Corporate-manufactured adolescent crazes were so much better in my day. God, I miss grunge.

Wait... it still is my day. Fuck.

Because it's Mountain Dew Code Livewire Snowboarding off a Flying C-130 into an Extreme Hot Tub full of Naked Nymphomaniacs.

And that makes it cool.

He said that because my line about kicking my mother in the face is straight from that site. I just kinda threw that in there for a little nod to people who knew it.

I guess it became popular when some suit decided to start marketing it. You'd better eat Bagel Bites because Tony Hawk does and look how extreme and cool he is. Also, buy his video games and fingerboards instead of buying a real skateboard and doing it for real. 'Cause anything to do with skateboarding or X-TREME sports is like totally cool. And young impressionable kids will buy into it.

Maddox has a good article on it.
