Crush...Yiff...Destroy!

Just a small annoyance, but still an annoyance nonetheless, is when I want to go back to the front page of CYD from the forums and not having a link to navigate there (for the longest time I kept instinctively clicking on the puking racoon because it just seems the logical link back to CYD proper, though I've since retrained myself not to do that)

Instead, when I want to reference an article or archived piece of furry miscellanea I have go back into my bookmarks to get there, which is fine for me but for those who are new or aren't regulars it might be annoying, not to mention people being linked straight to the forums may not even realise there's a site beyond that.

I think a small link added to the top of the forums page would be a quick, easy little improvement to site navigation.

I concur. Both the logo and the "Crush...Yiff...Destroy! Forum Index" hypertext take you back to the forum index. It would be nice if the logo or some new link took you back to CYD's main index or something.

PHPBB is not designed to do that. It's designed to link back to itself.

Surely, it's trivial to modify templates/SubSilver/overall_header.tpl and create your own links, or index_header.tpl - but it still takes a bit of work. As the main site and the forum are two different pieces of software, it's not horribly likely to be 'super-tied-together', however, if Mitch is bored enough, I might work on a simple php runner to snag the first few articles and add a link to the top of the page, as well as a 'site root' link.

I'M IMPORTANT AND NEED ATTENTION

Well, good web design centers around an easy navigational experience for the user, you know. There are all kinds of principles for keeping the click count down when users want to go from one place to another.

I think it would be nice to have the CYD logo take you back to the front page as well. No fancy lists of articles, no big changes, just click there and you go back to the front page.

I have no idea why that suggestion caused such a pissing from the peanut gallery, but I suspect it has something to do with SOMEONE(rankin) feeling they are a big fish in a small pond.. Seriously though, you remind me of an impotent angry old man yelling at kids to stay off his lawn sometimes.

Good web design definitely suggests that navigation should be pretty straightforward, and the home page at least should be accessible from any other page. Still, this isn't exactly a site that's designed to sell widgets or anything. Being able to surf back to the main page hasn't really seemed to be an issue before. For this board, it'd really be more of an amenity than necessity. It's not like Mitch has lost a customer because they couldn't get back in one or two clicks to one of Jerry's bamboid drawings or something. I've never had much call to go to the home page while in the forums, but it's easy enough to open a second browser and move and cut-and-paste between the two when you need to.

Still, if Mitch wants to go through the trouble of making such a concession to the users, he might look at this site to see what they did. It's one of the few sites I've seen using phpbb2 that put any kind of link up. Even Bronze Bow Publishing doesn't have a link, and you'd think they'd want one to hype back to their books.

My statement is that what is being requested is just the way the software is.. If someone wants this, they should realize that it requires Mitch to do yet more loveless work. I was merely attempting to point out that while possible, the software just wasn't designed to do so, and would require Mitch to get his hands all dirty with yet more shit (such as our spoiler tags, ignore, et al).

We now return you the this thread with less pomposity, or whatever..

Yeah. It's easy to get around, I was only posting because I thought the OP had a good point and was a little surprised and put off by the needless negativity and "I KNOW SOFTWARES U DONT!" tripe that it generated. I know I've clicked on that a few times hoping to get back to the root webpage before I learned it doesn't do that.

Yeah. It is a good idea, if Mitch ever feels like tweaking the board a bit more. I personally don't have much use for it, but it would probably be handy for newbies who might want to look at an article that is being referred to in a thread. Fortunately, most folks where are good about linking when mentioning such things.

I know how the tweaking bug can sometimes bite. I'm hoping to convince my employers to let me update their website. It needs more structure, better content, and I want to do some search engine optimzation work on it to try and get us scoring higher on search engines. As it is now, I get tired of looking before I manage to find out how many pages in we are on SEs. I hit about page 10 or 15 and give up, knowing it's obviously not good if we're not even that far. If it's any hint as to how long it's been since it was last updated, the front page states its optimized for Netscape 3.0 and IE 3.0. Oooold.

It's also a bit of plotting on my part, since I'd like to get away from environmental work and more into tech writing and web design. So, if I can enhance their page on company time and meet with some kind of measurable results, I can add it to my career-changing portfolio. :)
